Filecoin

• With a total cap of 2 billion FIL tokens, 70% is earmarked for mining rewards, increasing with network adoption.

• Allocations include 10% to advisors and ICO investors, 15% to Protocol Labs, and 5% to a foundation, alongside deflationary mechanisms affecting supply.

As of today 07 November 2026, the price of Filecoin is ₹83.73 INR, with a 24-hour trading volume of ₹5.80 Cr USD. The market capitalisation for Filecoin is ₹68.97 CrUSD. The circulating supply is 845439845 Filecoin, with the total supply also being 1956861981 Filecoin.

Pros:

• Filecoin aims to offer a decentralised alternative to traditional cloud storage, possessing the potential to disrupt the market significantly.

• It incentivises the provision of storage space, thereby supporting the expansion of its network.

Cons:

• The ICO of Filecoin faced criticism for being tailored towards high-income investors, limiting broader participation.

• There are concerns regarding the schedule for releasing the supply of tokens, which could adversely affect the market.

• FIL's blend of blockchain and AI for decentralised storage presents a disruptive potential in cloud services, offering an investment opportunity with staking benefits, though due diligence is advised.

• Filecoin's unique proposition lies in its decentralised storage network utilising the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) protocol, aiming for competitive, secure data storage.

• By offering a decentralised storage solution, Filecoin addresses centralised data control, enhancing web accessibility and user data custody.

• Developed by Protocol Labs and founded by Juan Benet, Filecoin's team comprises experts in computer science and cryptography, supported by reputable investors.

• Filecoin's 2017 ICO raised $205 million, with FIL tokens priced at a discount, not distributed until the main net launch in the fall of 2020.

• FIL investment risks include market volatility, regulatory shifts, technical hurdles, and competition in the storage sector, dependent on decentralised storage demand.

The Filecoin whitepaper outlines a decentralised storage network that utilises blockchain technology and a native cryptocurrency, FIL, to create an open market for data storage and retrieval services. The network is built on top of the IPFS, enhancing it with an economic layer to incentivise data storage.

In the Filecoin network, clients pay storage providers to store their data. Storage providers, in turn, earn FIL by providing storage space and proving they are reliably storing the data over time. This is achieved through cryptographic proofs, including Proof-of-Replication (PoRep) and Proof-of-Spacetime (PoSt), which ensure that data is stored correctly and securely.

The network's design aims to provide robustness and efficiency. It is designed to be self-healing, with automatic detection and repair of faults. The market for storage and retrieval is open, meaning that anyone can participate as a client or a storage provider, leading to competitive prices.

Filecoin's tokenomics are designed to ensure the long-term sustainability of the network. The total supply of FIL is capped, with a portion allocated to miners as block rewards, which decrease over time. This creates a deflationary pressure on the supply. Additionally, Filecoin implements a burning mechanism where a small amount of FIL is destroyed with each transaction, further reducing the total supply.

The whitepaper also discusses the network's governance, which is community-driven. Decisions about the network's future, such as upgrades or changes to the protocol, are made through a decentralised process involving FIL holders.

Filecoin's vision is to create a more efficient and decentralised web where users have control over their data. By providing an alternative to traditional cloud storage providers, Filecoin aims to reduce reliance on centralised entities and improve the web's overall resilience.

The whitepaper presents a detailed technical overview of the network's architecture, including the consensus mechanism, the role of various types of nodes (clients, storage miners, retrieval miners), and the economic incentives that drive the network's functioning.

In summary, the Filecoin whitepaper describes a sophisticated and ambitious project that seeks to leverage blockchain technology to revolutionise the way we store and access data. It proposes a system where the principles of decentralisation, economic incentives, and community governance come together to create a more secure, efficient, and user-centric Internet.
